Did you know that there is an almost hidden town in the mountains of Vietnam where it snows?

Sapa is an exquisite little town located in the northern mountains of Vietnam. One way or another, we probably already saw Sapa in pictures or heard about it somewhere on the internet.

In our previous articles, we showed you many places in Vietnam that are unique to their own. At this point, it’s clear that Vietnam never runs out of charm because Sapa is yet another town in Vietnam that will surely take your breath away.

In this article, we’ve gathered the top 8 places you should never miss in Sapa, Vietnam!

What is Sapa Vietnam known for?

The small town of Sapa is known for its stunning rice terraces that lay over a deep valley, the cool weather that can go down as low that it causes snow, and the ethnic community that continues to preserve the cultures and traditions as well as cultivate the rice terraces the same way for centuries.

Sapa is also a popular destination for local and foreign tourists as this is the only place that snows in Vietnam. The coldest months in Sapa Vietnam are from December to March and around this time, visitors flock to get a glimpse of the snow-covered rice terraces and experience the unusually cool weather in the tropical country.

Is Sapa Vietnam worth visiting?

If trekking through a beautiful landscape, getting to know different ethnic cultures and traditions, and experiencing spectacular views are some of your favorite things to do while traveling, then the answer to this question is “YES!”.

There’s nothing unworthy in Sapa as this little town might be quaint but its beauty is bold!

How to go around Sapa?

The best way to go around Sapa as a first-time traveler is to book a tour package online. Usually, tour packages include trekking by the valley, spending a full or half day in the villages, or a mix of all the activities.

Tour packages often start around $20 and can go up to $100 but cost will depend on number of days spent, how many places you plan on going, and if food is included. Of course, you don’t have to include all of the places in your tour package since some areas are easily accessible even for first-time travelers.

But if you are not yet confident to explore Sapa on your own, you can book through our favorite booking websites for tours and attractions!

To make your trip planning easier, you can follow this link for all your booking needs! No need to go to all the booking websites.

1. Fansipan Mountain

First on our list is Fansipan Mountain, the largest mountain located in the Indochina region. It spans over Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos and stands at a staggering height of 3,147 feet! That is why Fansipan Mountain is dubbed the “Roof of Indochina”.

We can say that climbing this mountain is an adventure in itself since the trail is quite difficult and physically exhausting, but it’s for these reasons that Fansipan is popular among hikers and trekkers. It usually takes 3-5 days to go up the mountain by trekking.

Despite the difficulty to reach the top, the view is worth every sweat shed and every pain endured as it genuinely feels like you’re on top of the world or above the heavens!

Fortunately, you can take a cable car or a train car to the top of the mountain if you wish to skip the stairs. As to which you should take, it depends on your preference. If you like to see the overlooking view as you go up Fansipan Mountain, you should take the cable car. However, if you’re interested to go through the nature and vegetation that surround the mountains, the train car would be best.

No matter how you get up there, all will be worth it once you see the breathtaking view from the top of Fansipan Mountain.

A common sight in the village is villagers working hard all day. The women do the weaving and the embroidering, some forging jewelry out of gold and silver. Other villagers are up on the terraces cultivating rice and corn.

Thoughts on Sapa Vietnam

Sapa is a great place for trekking and simply immersing yourself in nature above the mainland.

Most of the attractions we’ve mentioned in this blog are geared towards getting to know the place and meeting the people who continue to live and preserve tradition.

For some, this may not look much but visiting the many locations of Sapa is more of a personal journey. The beauty of Sapa is simply astonishing, its essence is far from what we know in the modern world. Perhaps, the simplicity that it tries to preserve is what makes this travel destination worth visiting!

Have you ever been to Sapa before? What were your experiences?
